George Rhoads is kind of a dorky Renaissance man- a painter, origami master, and rolling ball run sculptor. His 42nd Street Ballroom sculpture doesn’t evoke dancing in gowns, but instead the clicking, clacking and shooting of a child’s game. The giant 8 x 8 x 8 foot clear cube was installed at Port Authority in 1983 and entertains the commuters, bums and weirdos that hang out there.
Rhoads has been focusing on rolling ball and wind sculptures for the past 30 years, thinking of himself as a sort of post-Industrialist prophet- making machinery easily understandable to his viewers.
