Leonardo's horse is part of an equestrian monument to Francesco Sforza, designed by Leonardo da Vinci from 1482 to 1493, to be cast in bronze, which was able to complete only a model in clay, lost.
Leonardo knew perfectly well that the quality of the horse was very important to stress the importance of character and then studied thoroughly, in the Ducal stables, all anatomical details of the animal, making preparatory drawings using as models some horses already famous for their beauty. The designs portrayed the finest anatomical parts of each horse, with the intention of making it a sort of"Assembly" to obtain the ideal horse and give then the best to characters who, in various ways, wanted to honor; among his notes are notes like:"Florentine is big and Morel has a nice very nice head and neck», or «Ronzone, white, has beautiful thighs, and is located at Porta Comasina». He also became interested in respect to relaxation and muscle tension during the action, to give expression to the statue.
