Contagious
This pavilion by Sol Calero has contagious colours; it makes me happy. I see columns that look like tree branches. Paintings with primary colors are hung on the beams. There are paintings in the shape of bananas, mushrooms and trumpets.
In the space there are chairs in the shape of little elephants and benches with bright colours. The space is roofed and offers protection against the rain and the strong sunshine.
This is an artwork that changes our behaviour. We are in a space that deviates from what we are used to and therefore take a fresh look at what occupies us. The pavilion by Sol Calero invites us to be as surprised and spontaneous as children.

Aanstekelijk

Casa Anacaona resulted from a collaboration between the artist and Folkestone-based creatives with the aim of making a social space for people to gather for formal or informal activities.

Casa Anacaona is a large-scale, site-specific tropical pavilion designed by Sol Calero and constructed in collaboration with local creatives in Folkestone. Casa Anacaona travelled to WOMAD to be decorated by festival-goers in painting workshops and returned to Kent for Folkestone Triennial in 2017.
www.tammybedford.co.uk:
During the day the artist hosted a series of painting workshops where festival-goers could create decorative elements for the pavilion. In the evenings it became a space for social interaction where people could sit, talk, eat, drink, and enjoy being part of the installation s transformation.

Although she lives and works in Berlin, Sol Calero s art has the freshness and colour we might associate with Latin America she is from Venezuela, and is intrigued by the cultural stereotypes of which she s become highly aware as a trans-national artist working in many countries and cultures.
The pavilion then travelled to Womad Festival (as a co-production with Womad World of Art) where festival goers attended workshops and contributed many of the decorative additions. The brightly painted furniture contributes to the sense of place within which visitors may have a cross-cultural experience, nudged to consider cultural differences and the stereotypes that loom large in our thinking.

Part painting, part sculpture, part social space, Casa Anacaona placed contemporary art within a music context at WOMAD, and situated music and dance within contemporary art at Folkestone Triennial.

Sol Calero s practice refers to Latino culture and its exchange of influence with Western European traditions. She is interested in reflecting the ambiguity of cultural signs, and investigating the way in which meanings can proliferate and change. She makes paintings and drawings, but also works with found objects, fabrics, and site-based practices including installations incorporating Salsa dancing sessions, hairdressing salons and cybercaf s.
