To help the other
Angel by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu is an artwork that brings conflicting feelings: I need to look ánd I don't want to look. How is this possible?
This is partly because Angel is a hyper-realistic artpiece. You see a realistic subject that moves you because it appeals to the fear of the viewer. Still the artwork does not repel.
This angel is obviously displayed realistic: you can see hair, skin, feathers. The repulsion arises because the angel does not meet the expectations; an angel has to be attractive and endearing. But this angel is fragile, vulnerable and in need. This angel cannot help us; we need to help the angel.
Besides repulsion Angel is calling for shame. I am ashamed of my sadism. I catch myself haunted by the pain and suffering of the other and the desire to see all of the lurid details. Shamelessly I look along the hairline, down the pants along the leg. While the angel is defenceless, I keep on watching.
With a lot of hyper-realistic artworks you know why you strive to look at it, you know what the effect is. In Angel this is hard to find. I realize that I long for an angel but it’s not allowed to believe in it according our culture. I long for help but our society demands us to be self-reliance. Now I'm afraid that the angel is death, that I cannot ask to be helped anymore and that there is no way out. I don’t want to see my own suffering, I don't want to know I am given up,
The only thing that might help is revive the angel, if that's still possible. I am helpless because I cannot reach the angel because the net is in-between, the net that the angel has trapped,
Sun Yuan and Peng Yu make with Angel clear that we need to change. The human must turn to each other, be loyal, be helpful. Self-reliance is a dead end and leads to loneliness and fear.

Vertaling

People were appalled by a sculpture depicting a fallen angel in gruesome detail that was unveiled in Beijing earlier this week.
The duo explained that the work illustrates the tension and transition between surrealism and realism, between the supernatural and the mundane.
The angel has become completely powerless, unable to do God's will or to help others.
The artwork was created by two controversial Beijing artists, Sun Yuan and Peng Yu.
These artists are renowned for working with extreme materials such as human fat tissue, live animals and baby cadavers to deal with serious issues like perception, death and the human condition.

Fallen angels are usually known as devils. But this one by Sun Yuan and Peng Yu is a lot different. Made from fiber-reinforced polymer and silica gel, this angel takes the form of an old woman dressed in a white gown, and the wings on her back have been plucked clean. The angel is either asleep or dead. Its made manifest in the physical world, yet cannot help the believers nor carry out divine will.
Sun Yuan and Peng Yu is an artist duo from Beijing. They have had created installations using cadavers and fat tissue. However, not all of their project are metaphysical. Many exhibits have featured guns, like a blind group disassemble of AK rifles. The Angel is now displayed in Dominique and Sylvain Levy collection.
