‘The Niijima Floats’ in de centrale hal van het World Trade Center op Schiphol is één van de grootste en meest monumentale kunstwerken op de luchthaven. Het lijkt alsof de omgeving speciaal voor dit indrukwekkende kunstwerk is gemaakt. De ruimte waar het werk zich bevindt, een diepe gang met veel glaswanden, draagt sterk bij aan de beleving ervan. Wanneer de bezoeker er langs loopt wordt het zicht in eerste instantie belemmerd door de matte glazen wanden, maar wie aan één van de zijkanten gaat kijken wordt verrast door een verzameling van 85 glazen bollen in alle kleuren van de regenboog op een flinterdunne waterspiegel. Hun afmetingen variëren tussen de 80 en 100 centimeter doorsnee. De glazen bollen zijn voor Dale Chihuly (1941) een herinnering aan zijn jeugd, aan de kleine glazen bolletjes, afkomstig van Japanse visnetten, die aan de Amerikaanse kust aanspoelden.
