This artwork is what we need
Phane by Armando is large (it’s more than human’s hight), has an irregular surface, has a whimsical form. The rectangular part is fairly flat and has a slightly slanted shape on the outside. The standing part is curved at the top. It does not use sculptural possibilities like a transition between the standing part and the rectangle part, does not use depth, has only one color. The work of art does not bother to be 'beautiful'.
The statue could be an axe but is rather a flag because it is a rectangle rather than a curved shape. The shape of the surface could suggest a hilly landscape but it could be a wound aswell. The different possible interpretations of the artwork makes it ambiguous. The fairly flat and thick rectangular shape with an irregular surface feels colossal. The material bronze has a serious aura. Because a limited number of resources (one color, one material, one type of surface) is used, the sculpture is clear.
Phane by Armando is located in a restaurant of a concert hall; a room where people are relaxed and delighted, are wearing refined materials. The sculpture on the other hand is colossal, ambiguous, serious, is not 'beautiful': in many respect the artwork is the opposite of it’s surroundings. This opinionated artwork has a clear message but keeps it’s secrets.
Let's take the opportunity to speculate about the meaning of the sculpture. It’s certain that the work of art is tall, has a monumental appearance, is severe. Let's assume that the sculpture represents a flag (the title gives us a hand). This brings me to the interpretation of a historical event (flag, monumental, large and serious), that is painful (not ‘beautiful'), that has different sides (ambiguous). I like to know why this artwork is placed in an environment that evokes to opposite feelings than the artwork does.
To me this work is a watchman, a conscience, a monument, a protector, a lodge for feelings. In this house of music this visual artwork is welcome. Music and visual arts are complementary; music is fleeting and visual art is grounded. This artwork could be placed here with the desire to increase openness, nuancedness and seriousness and still with delight and relaxness. This work of art is exactly what we need, being in a concerthall.
