Wednesday, 13 July at the San Giuliano park, Venice Mayor Giorgio Orsoni and the President of the institution and great parks John Caprioglio presented to the public two Toni Benetton: macrosculture"the great column" of 1982, already exposed to the XLII Venice Biennale and"souls-memoirs of a cathedral" of 1964, awarded the Grand Prize of the sculpture to the Quadriennale in Lindau in 1965. The structures, located within the Park, an Infopoint and area on the Hill Lookout, were generously provided by Museo Toni Benetton and family.
The interest of Benetton (Treviso 1910-1996) for the area of St. Julian was already in the early 1970s, when the artist, stimulated by Piero Bergamo, who is the co-creator, the municipality of Venice has its first proposal for the port of the city, a high-impact visual signal by raising a key point of the place as the roundabout in San GiulianoBenetton, which it calls"porta di terraferma". The project, a boldly sventagliate leaf structure upward in a sort of triumphal arch, runs aground in the City Council, but was resumed after a few years, in 1985, when Benetton has a second proposal entitled"Sail", a structure of modular curved elements combined to form a sail blown by the wind (whose sketch will be donated by the municipality of Venice). The latest proposal of the sculptor for a"porta Venezia" is dated 1989: three columns, with wing doors in the upper part, of gigantic proportions, to be placed in the area adjacent to the entrance of the Ponte della Libertà. Once again, however, the bureaucratic process stops responding, and the project vanishes.
