The essence of an artwork
I see a puma in a curved space. It is made of cables where you can look through. If you walk underneath this artwork you will see that the surface of the space and the puma meet each other. The inside of the room enters the outside of the puma. The space and the puma are fused with each other. The puma is in it’s habitat.
If you walk crosswise under and along the artwork the puma and the space deform. However the brain corrects this deformation and you still understand what you see.
You can interpreted the curved space as a port of a city for instance. Than the puma is the emblem of the city.
You notice it: you can conceive all kind of things with this artwork. But let's be honest. There is no puma. There is air. We see a puma in it.
Only a little part of an artwork is real. We need to make the essence by ourselves. This is what Maarten de Reus shows us with Cage With No Puma In It.

De essentie van het kunstwerk
Ik zie een poema in een gebogen ruimte. Dit is gemaakt van kabels waar je dwars doorheen kunt kijken. Als je onder dit kunstwerk doorloopt zie je dat het oppervlakte van de ruimte en de poema in elkaar doorlopen. De binnenkant van de ruimte wordt ineens de buitenkant van de poema. De ruimte en de poema zijn met elkaar versmolten. De poema is zijn eigen habitat.
Als je kruiselings onder en langs het kunstwerk loopt vervormen de poema en de ruimte zich. Toch corrigeert je brein deze vervorming en snap je nog steeds wat je ziet.
De gebogen ruimte kun je opvatten als een poort, van bijvoorbeeld een stad. Dan wordt de poema het embleem van de stad.
Je merkt het: je kunt van alles bedenken bij dit kunstwerk. Maar laten we eerlijk zijn. Er is geen poema. Er is lucht. Wij zien hier een poema in.
Een kunstwerk is maar voor een klein gedeelte werkelijk. De essentie moeten wij zelf maken. Maarten de Reus wijst ons hierop met Cage With No Puma In It.

In December 2007 the ‘Cage With No Puma In It’ was completed in the city of Apeldoorn in the Netherlands. The sculpture is situated on top of a former landfill, which has been turned into a park.
The brief for the competition was to create a landmark around the idea of ‘appearing and disappearing’. It made me think of the ‘big-cat sightings’ that had been reported in the region in 2005. At the time it was big news and even the army participated in the search for the elusive beast, although it would seem to have been no more than an urban-myth; a classic example of appearance and disappearance.
Viewed from a distance the sculpture gives the impres¬sion of a puma inside a bulging cage. On climbing the hill, however, it becomes apparent that cage and animal are one and the same flowing form and the puma gradu¬ally vanishes into the intricate twists and contours of the steel mesh.

De 'poema' is gebaseerd op een verhaal dat speelt in de zomer van 2005. Het gerucht ging dat er op de Veluwe een poema gezien was. De media stonden er vol van en veel journalisten waren er druk mee bezig.
Op de Vellertheuvel in Apeldoorn-Noord staat een bijzonder kunstwerk: Kooi-met-geen-poema-er-in, gemaakt door Maarten de Reus. Afhankelijk van waar je staat kun je een silhouet van een dier waarnemen … of niet …

Als kunstenaar Maarten de Reus een paar jaar later gevraagd wordt een kunstwerk te ontwerpen met het thema verdwijnen en verschijnen vindt hij inspiratie in Winnie en ontwerpt de kooi-met-geen-poema-er-in.
Van een afstandje lijk je een katachtige in de stalen kooi te zien. Maar als je dichterbij komt verdwijnt het dier en zijn kooi en poema één en hetzelfde. Op 12 juli 2008 is het werk onthuld. Het bestaat uit 2000 meter staaldraad dat in totaal 3000 kilo weegt en negen meter hoog is. Moeilijk te missen dus!
