A humble line that overcomes gravity
A strong line comes from the earth and manages to make a swirl in the air. For a short while beauty occurs in the air. The work is called a ‘Lusvormig (Loop-Shaped) Object’; a neutral name for an artwork that caresses the eye. If the artwork would be more extravagant instead of humble, it would be more powerful and joyful and could even be a landmark.
The work of Otto Heuvelink is a humble abstract work. A sturdy rectangular shape turns cautious about its axis, tends slightly, leaner, and moves back with vigor to his foundation. To me the line would be stronger en more beautifull if it was standing more upright. The work is carefully made of a shiny material with sharp edges.
The work is in the verge between two busy roads. A pedestrian and bicycle path are further away, so it is not possible to get close to the work and to walk around it. This is unfortunate . Because of the distance the line and the surface are not completeley visible.
The work is located between a park and a large residential area. This is an environment without landmarks. The artwork fits in this area; it is an inspiration to elegance and softness. The location would be suitable for a landmark and this could be Lusvormig Object if it dared it to be.

Compared with other artworks
The Object is elegant, but it’s lacking the figurative association and expressive power of the artwork of Jan de Baat (Amsterdam, see picture 1, more information). Jan de Baat makes you join the happiness, proud and sense of community, which is feld after the liberation from the Nazi’s.

The line from Skygate by Robert Barr (San Francisco, see picture 2, more information) does not always have a clear sense of direction or a fluid change in turn, movement or speed. The surface is finished roughly. It makes me think of a deteriorated sail or a damaged port.

The work is in some sence comparable to Pyramid by Josef Erben (Berlin, picture 3, more information); this artwork seems to have a soft surface and makes a careful curve. Pyramid on the other hand has self esteem and spaciousness which is lacking Lusvormig (Bow-Shaped) Object.

Another work with additional qualities is The Arch of Lon Pennock (Amsterdam, see picture 4, more details). This work is a clear and strong mark and makes you feel welcome, but misses the subtlety of the Object.

Voor o.a.

Otto Haley (born 1942) is a versatile artist. He visited the Rietveld Academy and graduated from sculpture and ceramics. After some years of design in the field of ceramics was his interest shifted to plastics formed with polyester and aluminum. For e.g. Amsterdam, Bergen, Edam and Veenendaal, he led large monumental works in stainless steel. The loopshaped object between two lanes of the Kamperfoelieweg is one of them.
