De calvinistische noorderlingen - met het bijbelse gebod 'gij zult u geen gesneden beeld maken' in het achterhoofd – hadden weinig op met de beeldhouwkunst zo blijkt uit felle reacties op het Vondelmonument. De ontwerper van de sokkel, de Limburgse architect Pierre Cuypers, had onder Vondels voeten vier schutsengelen aangebracht - een al te katholiek ornament, vonden de verbolgen calvinisten.
Op het voetstuk staan een korte levensbeschrijving, een hulde aan zijn schrijversschap en zijn voornaamste werken vermeld. Op de hoeken van het voetstuk vier engelachtige muzen, de personificaties van de vier dichtvormen van Vondel. Elke muze is herkenbaar aan een attribuut: de slagpen staat voor hekeldicht, de harp voor lierdicht, het masker voor treurdicht en het boek met de pen voor heldendicht.
