Appel maakte het beeld in Toscane waar hij sinds 1989 een landgoed bezat. ’s Zomers verbleef hij er en maakte er o.a. beelden gemaakt van gevonden voorwerpen. Flowers maakte hij van ronde ploegmessen die hij bij zijn buurman, alsmede kunstverzamelaar en wijnboer, in een schuur vond.

Het beeld is een metafoor voor de gemengde Dapperbuurt, vanwege de veelheid aan materialen, zoals oude houten balken en ronde ploegmessen gevonden op het Toscaanse platteland. Ivar Manuel, tot slot: 'Ik hoop dat we met dit beeld op deze plek onze herinneringen aan deze grote kunstenaar levend houden. Maar ook, in de woorden van de kunstenaar, dat we gaan nadenken over het leven, over vrijheid en vergankelijkheid. Dát is de kracht van kunst in openbare ruimte. We zijn trots dat we dit prachtige beeld weer terug hebben op deze mooie plek.'

In 2010 verdween een bloem uit het kunstwerk. Daarom werd in 2012 besloten om het beeld te restaureren. Maar de familie van Karel Appel had de mal niet meer.
Gelukkig bleek er in Italië een vrijwel identieke bloem van Karel Appel te staan. Die mocht echter niet verscheept worden. Dus schakelde stadsdeel Oost een Italiaanse bronsgieter in om de Italiaanse bloem na te maken. Maar net op dat moment was er in het Cobra Museum in Amstelveen ook zo'n bloem van Appel te zien. De afspraak met de Italiaanse bronsgieter werd afgezegd. Vervolgens bleek er geen bronsgieter in Nederland te zijn die tijd had om de bloem in het Amstelveense museum na te maken. Daarop werd toch weer de Italiaanse bronsgieter benaderd. En die is nu aan de slag om een echte Karel Appel-bloem af te leveren en het kunstwerk compleet te maken.
